Your Past

One of the biggest sources of our frustration is…our past!  For some reason we are so focused on the past that, instead of letting it shape our future, we let it dictate our future.  We let our past limit who we can become.

We worry about what others will think of us if they discover our past, how we can avoid revealing our past, and even how we can alter (or eliminate) our past.

Here are some facts to consider:

1. Your past is yours!  Whatever you did or didn’t do is part of who you are NOW.

2. Whatever you did or didn’t do cannot be done or undone NOW.

3. HOWEVER, simply because history is carved in stone does not mean it is so. What do I mean? Simple, I could have carved into a nice piece of marble or granite that I am the sexiest creation ever! That may (or may not) have once been true, but I seriously doubt that is still the case. Thus, just because it’s carved into historical stone does not mean I’m doomed to be the sexiest creation ever forever.  And just because there may be (or may not be) mistakes, errors, blunders or complete screw-ups in your past does not mean you are doomed for the rest of forever.

I remember learning about the Ancient Egyptians (NO, not first hand, thank you), they carved lots of tidbits of information into stone and *gasp* not all of it was, or is, true.  I know, shocking isn’t it?

If you’ve got bits of your past that are giving you trouble, there’s really nothing you can do about changing them or making them go away, but you can decide whether they are going to shape who you are or enslave you.  Part of this decision might be to shed some things, habits, and/or people from your life.  But remember, it is YOUR life.

Live Beyond Your Past

I remember, as a child, having a Backwards Day, where we tried to do everything backwards.  Even then, it was a lot harder than it sounds.  To be honest, walking forward is difficult enough for me.  I’m one of those who stumbles over air pockets, so trying to do things backwards was not a pretty sight or experience.  Ever tried to ride a bicycle backwards?  How about riding a bicycle backwards while wearing your clothes backwards?

Maya Angelou has a wonderful quote: “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, however, if faced with courage, need not be lived again.”  Every single one of us has a past.  Every single one of us have things we hope no one every finds out.

Why do we fear the past? Because it cannot be changed!!  It can be forgiven, but not changed.

Why do we worry about the past when it cannot be changed? Good question. Worrying won’t change it; Focusing on it can’t change it; Dwelling on it can’t change it; Hiding from it doesn’t make it any different and can’t make it go away.

So what are we to do?  Quit worrying about the past.  History is painful! But we have the choice to either face it, own up to it, and heal; or we can keep focusing on it and let it eat us alive!  We can learn from it and change today to prepare for tomorrow, or we can try to go into walk through our lives backwards.

Today is yesterday’s tomorrow.  To change tomorrow, alter today!  Think about that.

I’m not lost, just weird.

Wouldn’t It Be Easier To Learn?

Wouldn't it be easier to learn?

Ever wonder why we tend to cling to the negative memories?  We have so many experiences in our lives, why carry around the negative?

Think about it this way: Which is easier, writing your experiences on a stone and carrying them around, or writing them on a scrap of paper to carry?

While the answer to this query is fairly obvious, we have the tendency to carry around the stone tablets of every hurt, wrong, bad experience, negative word ever given to us.  You’d think we’d learn that pushing stones up a hill is pointless and a LOT of work!

BUT, if we learn from them, instead of holding on to them, we can move on with our lives a lot easier.

Sisyphus was condemned to push a rock up a mountain over and over.  You are NOT Sisyphus and you have not been condemned to rock pushing, so let the stones of the past go.  Learn from the experiences and let’s move forward!
